Is It Time To Change Storage Units?

One of the best things about renting storage units is that the rental terms are usually month to month. This means that, as your storage needs change, you can also change your storage unit with little hassle. Look for these markers that it is time to move to a new storage unit.

You Cannot Utilize the Space Effectively

Once you pick a storage unit, you can't just push out the walls and create more space for yourself. Neither can you pull those walls in to reduce your bills. The only way to resize your unit is to move into a new one. If you are storing a set amount of items, then the amount of storage you need won't change much. However, most people are constantly putting things in and pulling other things out.

Every time you do a major move, take stock of your space, particularly if this is a permanent change. This is particularly true if you are trying to add a large amount of items to the space. You need to ensure that your piles are short enough that you can reach everything safely and that the items on the bottom will not be crushed. As the pile grows, it may be worthwhile to simply start preparing to move instead of working to get everything placed efficiently. You might even want to pick up another small unit while you wait for your perfect option to open up.

You Need Additional Protection for Your Items

When you went to pick out a storage unit, you probably had a lot of different options, and only one of them was size. At many facilities, you can also decide based on things like whether your unit will be indoor or outdoor, what floor your unit will be on, and whether or not your unit is climate controlled. This can be overwhelming at first, and you might have made the wrong decision at the outset.

This is one decision you can't be afraid to make. You are storing your items because you don't want to throw them out. However, if you don't invest in proper security and climate control, then that is where they are going to end up. Time is not kind to most items, and the cycles of heat and cooling, and moisture and dryness, will break down the items in your storage unit more quickly than you might realize.

You Want to Go to Another Facility

Moving facilities is not something you want to do often, no matter what deal the new place may be offering. However, there are times where your current facility simply no longer meets your needs. Perhaps you need additional storage, but there are no units available. You could be looking for better climate controls or security, and the only way to obtain these things may be to move to a new location.

Treat moving facilities just like you would any other move. Take a look at all your options, and be sure to factor in the cost of moving if you are looking for a discount on rent. Tour your new facility and make sure that all the security features are in good repair.

While moving all your items is a hassle, sometimes it is worthwhile if it means you can lower your costs or better protect your items. The whole point of a storage unit is to be an inexpensive way to keep clutter out of your home. When your storage unit isn't providing those two things, it is time to make that move. It is important that you do not go through the cost and inconvenience of a move, only to wish you hadn't.
