How To Get Ready For Moving Day

Whether you're moving from one apartment to the next, or whether you're moving from a house to another one, moving can be a regular pain in the neck. Here are some ideas that will help you to be organized and to make the move an actual pleasant one.

Make A Plan - When you make a plan you'll feel better organized. It helps, too, to write your plan down.

  • Write down the day that you need to change utilities from your present location to the next. That would also be a good day to officially change your mailing address and to send out notices to friends and family members that you'll have a new address.
  • Start going through closets, drawers and cabinets to rid them of things you don't want to take with you. Enlist your family's help on this part of the move.
  • If you have a tiny apartment, you can probably do everything on one day. However, if you live in a larger home, plan on  several days or even a week.
  • Plan on eating on paper plates for a few days so that you can pack dishes, pots and pans and other cooking items. Or, even better, eat out and arrange for pizza delivery.

Contact A Moving Company - Of course, if you don't have a lot of stuff, you can probably make the move by yourself. Ask some friends to help, too.

  • When you talk to the people at the moving company, be very specific about when you want them to arrive at your home. Put it in writing.
  • Make a paper copy of where you want your belongings to go. If you're packing your own things, mark each box with the name of the designated room where you'll want them.
  • After you've made your paper copy, make small cutouts of major things like sofas, chairs, and other pieces of furniture. Put the cutouts on a large poster board.
  • Make sure that the movers have access to the poster board before the move and upon arriving at your new location.

The movers are trained and have the experience to take care of all of your belongings so that they won't be damaged. However, it's smart to keep bedding with you so that you won't have to look for it upon your arrival at your new home. Keep your medications close at hand, too. Encourage your children to bring a favorite toy or stuffed animal with them, too.
